Chemical Peels, Explained: What They Do and What to Expect

If the words "chemical peel" make you picture a red, raw face and a week in hiding, you're not alone! At HD Medical & Aesthetics, serving Wilmington and Hampstead, NC, we find it's one of the most misunderstood treatments in skincare. The truth is a lot less dramatic: most peels are gentle, quick, and leave you looking like yourself on a very good skin day.

Here's what you need to know before you book.

So what is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a solution applied to the skin that loosens the bonds holding dull, damaged surface cells in place. As those cells shed over the following days, fresher skin comes through underneath.

Think of it as exfoliation with a plan. Instead of scrubbing at the surface, a peel works evenly and to a controlled depth.

What can a peel help with?

People usually come to HD Medical & Aesthetics for one of these:

  • Dullness and rough texture: skin that looks tired no matter what you put on it

  • Uneven tone: sun spots, dark marks left behind after breakouts, and some forms of melasma

  • Breakouts and congestion: certain peels help clear clogged pores

  • Fine lines: softened over a series of treatments

A peel won't lift sagging skin or erase deep wrinkles, and anyone who promises otherwise is overselling. What it does well is improve the surface: tone, texture and clarity. Living on the Carolina coast means plenty of sun, so uneven tone is one of the most common concerns we see.

Not all peels are the same

This is where most of the confusion comes from. There are three broad levels:

Light peels use mild acids such as glycolic, lactic or salicylic acid. They work on the outermost layer only. Expect some tightness and light flaking for a few days, and many people go straight back to work.

Medium peels reach further into the skin and are better for more noticeable sun damage and discoloration. Plan on roughly a week of visible peeling and redness.

Deep peels are a medical procedure with significant recovery time. They're far less common and aren't where anyone starts.

Most first-timers begin with a light peel. Results build with a series, so slow and steady usually beats one aggressive treatment.

What does it feel like?

During a light peel you'll feel warmth and tingling, sometimes a bit of stinging, for a few minutes. Then it's neutralized or removed, and you're done. The whole appointment often takes under half an hour.

Afterward your skin may feel tight, like a mild sunburn. Peeling, if it happens, tends to start around day two or three. Not everyone visibly peels, and that doesn't mean it didn't work.

Looking after your skin afterward

Aftercare matters as much as the peel itself:

  • Wear sunscreen every day. Fresh skin is more vulnerable to the sun, and skipping this can undo your results. That goes double for beach days.

  • Don't pick or pull at flaking skin. Let it come away on its own.

  • Keep your routine simple. Gentle cleanser, plain moisturizer, and a pause on retinoids and exfoliants until your provider says it's fine to restart.

  • Skip heavy sweating and heat for a day or two.

Is a peel right for you?

Peels suit a wide range of people, but they're not for everyone at every time. Tell your provider if you're pregnant or nursing, prone to cold sores, have taken isotretinoin recently, or have a history of scarring or pigment changes. Skin tone matters too: deeper skin tones can absolutely have peels, but the type and strength need to be chosen carefully to avoid discoloration.

That's why every treatment at HD Medical & Aesthetics starts with a conversation. Your provider looks at your skin, asks about your history, and recommends the right option for you, or tells you plainly if something else would serve you better.
