Fall Skin Repair

Oct 12
4 min read

If you live on the Carolina coast, you know summer is hard to resist. Beach days at Wrightsville, boat afternoons on the Intracoastal, evenings on the porch. Your skin enjoyed all of it too, and by October it usually has something to say about it.

Maybe you've noticed a few new dark spots along your cheekbones. Maybe your skin looks duller than it did in May, or the fine lines around your eyes seem a little more settled in. That is what a season of sun, salt, heat and humidity leaves behind, and fall is the ideal time to do something about it.

What summer actually does to your skin

Ultraviolet light does two things at once. On the surface, it triggers extra pigment, which shows up as sun spots, freckling and uneven tone. Deeper down, it breaks apart collagen and elastin, the fibers that keep skin firm and smooth. Add in salt water, chlorine and air conditioning, and the skin's moisture barrier takes a hit as well.

For women in their late thirties and beyond, the effect is more noticeable. Collagen production naturally slows with age, and hormonal changes around perimenopause and menopause can leave skin thinner and drier. Damage that bounced back quickly at 25 tends to linger at 45.

Why fall is repair season

Most of the treatments that correct sun damage work by prompting your skin to renew itself. Freshly treated skin is more sensitive to sunlight while it heals, so the best results come when UV exposure is lower and you are spending less time outdoors.

Autumn gives you that window. The days are shorter, the sun is less intense, and you are not planning your week around the beach. Collagen-building treatments also take time, often several weeks to a few months, to show their full effect. Starting in October means your skin can look its best right as the holidays arrive.

Treatments that help reverse summer damage

There is no single right answer for every face, but these are the options we most often recommend at HD Medical & Aesthetics for post-summer repair.

Microneedling. Our ProPen microneedling creates tiny, controlled channels in the skin that signal your body to produce fresh collagen. It can soften fine lines, refine texture and help even out tone, with minimal downtime for most patients.

PRP skin rejuvenation. Platelet-rich plasma is drawn from a small sample of your own blood and concentrated for its growth factors. Used on its own or paired with microneedling, it supports your skin's natural healing and renewal process.

IPL photofacial. Intense pulsed light targets the brown spots and redness that sun exposure leaves behind, helping to even out skin tone on the face, chest and hands. Because treated skin needs to stay out of the sun, fall and winter are the ideal months for it.

Laser resurfacing. For deeper lines, rough texture and more established sun damage, laser resurfacing removes damaged surface skin and stimulates new collagen underneath. It involves some downtime, which is easier to plan for once beach season is over.

Chemical peels. A professional peel lifts away dull, sun-damaged surface cells to reveal brighter, smoother skin. We offer both the VI Peel and BioRePeel. The VI Peel is a medium-depth peel that works on sun spots, discoloration and fine lines, with a few days of visible peeling. BioRePeel is a gentler option with little to no downtime, a good fit if you want a fresh glow without stepping away from your routine. We will help you choose the one that matches your skin and your schedule.

Medical-grade skincare. What you do at home matters as much as what we do in the office. Fall is a good time to introduce or step up active ingredients such as vitamin C in the morning and a retinoid at night, at strengths and in combinations matched to your skin. We carry ZO Skin Health products in both offices, and you can also shop them online. We also carry Hydrinity and EltaMD sunscreens.

Collagen-stimulating treatments. For volume loss and laxity that the sun has accelerated, options like Sculptra work gradually to help rebuild your skin's own structure over time.

A consultation is where we sort out which of these, in which order, makes sense for you. Results vary from person to person, and a good plan accounts for your skin type, your health history and your goals.

Your at-home fall reset

A few simple changes will support any in-office treatment and help on their own:

  • Keep wearing sunscreen. Broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, every day, is the single most effective thing you can do to protect your results.

  • Switch to a richer moisturizer as the air dries out, and look for ceramides and hyaluronic acid to rebuild your barrier.

  • Exfoliate gently. Over-scrubbing sun-stressed skin makes discoloration worse, not better.

  • Get your skin checked. If a spot is new, changing, or looks different from the others, have a medical provider look at it before treating it cosmetically.

That last point is one of the advantages of a practice that offers both primary care and aesthetics. We look at your skin as part of your overall health.
